WINTER BATHING WITH CAROLINE LYKKEGAARD

Caroline Lykkegaard has, like many others, become a frequent winter-bather. For many people, a cold dip in the sea can seem like an activity that requires determination and mental preparation. For others, winter bathing can be a therapeutic and a thrilling experience, boosting one’s energy.

Caroline identifies with the last group and experiences many benefits in connection to winter bathing. We have asked her a number of questions about her routine, and which products she prefers to use, after her cold dip in the sea.

HOW WERE YOU INTRODUCED TO WINTER BATHING?
I have always been fascinated by winter bathing, as my parents live by the sea. Winter bathing is a typical activity among others in that area of Aarhus. A couple of years ago, my parents joined a Winter Bathing Club, where the entire family went and bathed. These trips became experiences that certainly made an impression on me.

ARE YOU A MEMBER OF A WINTER BATHING CLUB? AND WHY?
In the summer of 2020, I joined Aarhus Ø Winter Bathing club, and this is my first season as an active member. I joined because winter bathing gives me a unique feeling of renewed energy, well-being and peace. For me, it almost works as a therapeutic experience.

WHAT IS YOUR USUAL WINTER BATHING ROUTINE?
My routine starts with a large bottle of water that I drink half an hour before I take my first dip. I rinse myself under the cold shower before jumping in, take a few strokes and try to avoid getting my hair wet. After the dip, I do a few stretches and feel my body vibrate after the cold shock before going into the sauna. I usually sit in the sauna for ten minutes and take deep breathes whilst also drinking more water.

It can often be difficult to feel the heat going all the way from my toes to my fingertips. I therefore do some stretching exercises so my body really can absorb the heat from the sauna. I usually do up to three dips in the sea, followed by two sauna trips. After the last dip, I slip under a cold outdoor shower, and then quickly change into my comfortable wear.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT WINTER BATHING FOR YOU?
For me, the best thing about winter bathing is being able to forget time and place. When I sit in the sauna, time stands still and I feel very calmed down. After a dip in the cold sea, I feel invincible and my body feels stronger than ever. At the same time, there is also a social element in winter bathing, as I often do it with my friend. We joined the club together and attend the club events such as sauna therapy.

WHICH PRODUCTS DO YOU USUALLY USE AFTER A DIP IN THE SEA?
When I get home, I take a hot shower. The high temperature opens the skin pores, so that toxins, oils and dirt can be removed more easily, quickly and efficiently. For this step, I use my LYKKEGAARD bodyscrub to remove all the dead skin cells. Then I wash the remainder of salted ocean water of with the LYKKEGAARD bodywash. Lastly, I moisturize with my body with the body lotion and apply the oil to my face, because my skin often dries out after a dip in the sea.

DO YOU FEEL A DIFFERENCE ON HOW YOUR SKIN LOOK BEFORE / AFTER A DIP IN THE SEA?
As my body reaches a state of shock at the beginning of the first dip, my skin feels completely numb. It is a strange light feeling during, but after you can immediately feel that the heart rate increases and that the blood starts flowing faster. This gives more oxygen and nutrients to the skin and is just as energizing as running.

DO YOU FEEL A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR MIND AFTER?
A big difference is that I sleep better, if I have bathed in the evening. It is almost exhausting and relaxing at the same time. A dip in the ocean really relaxes me and easily calms me down in the evening. If I bathe in the morning, I feel an extra boost of energy for the best of the day. For me it’s better than three cups of coffee!

DO YOU DESCRIBE WINTER BATHING AS SELF-CARE?
For me winter bathing equals self-care, and therefore I prioritize doing it as a treatment for myself. It is cozy and liberating to sit with other winter bathers in the sauna, where you get close to others other without really knowing each other. Winter bathing for me is filled with good talks, cozy moments and self-care.
